Jonathan Fellows, DO, Medical Director of MIND’s Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Center, joined internationally recognized neurologist and bestselling author Dr. David Perlmutter for an in-depth conversation about the latest advances in Alzheimer’s disease, early detection, brain health, and the future of memory care.
Dr. Perlmutter is a board-certified neurologist, a six-time New York Times bestselling author, and an internationally recognized expert in brain health. On The Empowering Neurologist podcast, he interviews leading physicians, researchers, and innovators advancing the understanding and treatment of neurological disease.
As Medical Director of MIND’s Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Center, Dr. Fellows brings more than 25 years of clinical experience caring for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory disorders. He was invited to share his expertise on the evolving diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, as well as the growing importance of early detection and personalized care.
Throughout the conversation, Dr. Fellows and Dr. Perlmutter explored many of today’s most important topics in Alzheimer’s care, including:
- The latest advances in blood-based biomarkers, including p-tau217
- How biomarkers, brain imaging, and cognitive testing work together to support diagnosis
- The role of amyloid PET imaging and emerging anti-amyloid therapies
- APOE4 genetic risk and why genetics is not destiny
- The connection between metabolic health, vascular health, and cognitive decline
- The impact of exercise, nutrition, sleep, and other lifestyle factors on long-term brain health
- Emerging research focused on inflammation, microglia, and personalized approaches to Alzheimer’s care
One of the key messages from the discussion was that Alzheimer’s disease requires a comprehensive approach. While new therapies continue to advance, medications are only one part of patient care.
“Pharmaceuticals are one part of the picture. We know that we can empower ourselves by taking control of our lifestyle and modulating what we do on a day-to-day basis. Those changes have meaningful impacts on our health, longevity and brain health,” said Dr. Fellows.
The conversation also underscored the importance of identifying Alzheimer’s disease as early as possible, when patients have the greatest opportunity to benefit from lifestyle interventions, comprehensive evaluation, and, for appropriate candidates, emerging therapies.
