MIND UNVEILS NEW, EXPANDED HEADACHE AND FACIAL PAIN CENTER

Facility Delivers Access to Specialized Care and Accommodations for Headache Sufferers

Farmington Hills, Mich. – Michigan Institute for Neurological Disorders (MIND) announced the opening of its newly expanded Headache and Facial Pain Center. This state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to the specialized treatment of headache and facial pain disorders, featuring a patient-centric design tailored to the distinctive needs of its patients.

“One in four people suffer from a headache disorder – the chief complaint we see as neurologists – and few general neurology clinics are prepared to meet their needs effectively,” said Dr. Lauren Aymen, director of the Headache and Facial Pain Center. “The MIND Headache and Facial Pain Center was designed to provide a dedicated space where patients can receive high-quality, specialized care tailored to their specific needs, and we were fortunate to be able to expand into a space within the building that houses our headquarters in Farmington Hills.”

Aymen, along with a skilled team, including Dr. Mina Essak and Physician Assistant Jessica Epstein, lead the center. They bring together years of expertise and a compassionate approach to patient care. Both Aymen and Essak are fellowship trained in the headache specialty, with Aymen having completed her fellowship in Headache Medicine and Neuropathic Pain at the University of Michigan Headache and Neuropathic Pain Clinic in Ann Arbor, Mich. Essak completed his fellowship in Headache Medicine and Facial Pain at Duke University Hospital Durham, N.C.

“This Center is not only about managing pain but improving the overall quality of life for our patients. Rivaling some of the best hospitals, our facility is well-equipped to treat patients when they’re having an active pain flare-up while also managing their chronic pain disorder,” added Essak.

Located in a dedicated suite in MIND’s Farmington Hills headquarters, the Headache and Facial Pain Center has a footprint of more than 3,000 sq. ft. and was designed with patient comfort in mind; the facility incorporates features like natural lighting, dimmer switches in all rooms, and special accommodations to reduce sensory stimuli, such as dimly lit rooms for acute pain management. The center also avoids the use of fluorescent lighting and strong smells to create a calming environment for patients sensitive to external stimuli. There are separate spaces for patients in crisis, too.

Patients have access to a comprehensive range of services including trigger point injections, peripheral nerve blocks, Botox, and infusion therapy for both acute and chronic management of migraine and other headache and facial pain disorders. The center will be offering high-quality, evidence-based products on-site, such as magnesium supplements, to support patient treatment plans, part of its mission to treat the whole person.

These services may be in their own suite in MIND’s Farmington Hills headquarters, but patients have all the benefits of MIND’s related services – including a private infusion center and access to diagnostics tools like MRI – conveniently all under one roof and with ample parking.

The Headache and Facial Pain Center joins three other MIND Centers of Excellence: Alzheimer’s and Memory Loss, Multiple Sclerosis Center, and Parkinson’s Center. These Centers of Excellence are staffed by medical professionals who are recognized leaders in their specialty, adhere to high standards of patient care and maintain high standards for patient outcomes and satisfaction. Centers of Excellence are also involved in research and development, contributing to advances in their field. They emphasize a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, involving teams of specialists who work together to create comprehensive, individualized care plans for each patient, which is crucial in managing complex or rare conditions.
