Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center
Specialized Expertise. Integrated MS Care. Long-Term Partnership.
Comprehensive Care for Complex MS Management
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease that impacts the brain and spinal cord and requires specialized, long-term care. Diagnosis is only the first step. Effective management depends on accurate evaluation, carefully selected therapies, and ongoing monitoring of disease activity.
As a leading MS center and MS clinic in Michigan, the MIND Multiple Sclerosis Center provides comprehensive MS diagnosis, MS treatment, and long-term disease management, led by fellowship-trained MS neurologists and MS doctors serving Metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan. Patients come to MIND for expert evaluation, second opinions, and coordinated care from early evaluation through long-term management.
The program is led by Dr. Martin Belkin, Medical Director of the MIND MS Center, who has extensive experience in MS clinical trials and research.
Under his leadership, the Center emphasizes diagnostic precision, evidence-based treatment selection, and longitudinal disease monitoring.
Recognized as a Center for Comprehensive MS Care by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and caring for more than 5,500 patients annually, MIND is one of the largest private comprehensive MS centers in the U.S. Founded in 1999, the Center has built its reputation on coordinated treatment and a long-term partnership focused on maintaining mobility, independence, and quality of life.

If you’re experiencing symptoms or have concerns about MS, the specialists at MIND are here to help guide you through evaluation and next steps.
When MS Symptoms Need a Specialist
Neurological symptoms such as vision changes, numbness, fatigue, or coordination problems should be evaluated when they are persistent, progressive, or unexplained.
While many symptoms may have causes other than multiple sclerosis, timely evaluation helps clarify the diagnosis and guide appropriate next steps.

Patients Often Come to Us For:
- New neurological symptoms suggestive of MS
- MRI findings requiring further evaluation
- A confirmed MS diagnosis seeking specialized care
- MS relapse treatment and relapse management
- Coordination of disease-modifying therapy
Early diagnosis allows physicians to begin appropriate treatment strategies sooner. Advances in imaging and disease-modifying therapies now allow specialists to monitor disease activity, reduce relapse frequency, and influence long-term outcomes.
Early Signs and MS Symptoms:
Because symptoms vary widely, early signs of MS may be subtle or mistaken for other conditions.
- Vision changes (blurred or double vision)
- Numbness or tingling in the arms, legs, or face
- Persistent fatigue that does not improve with rest
- Balance or coordination difficulties
- Muscle weakness
- Bladder urgency, frequency, or difficulty emptying the bladder
- Cognitive changes, such as memory or concentration challenges
If you are experiencing new or unexplained neurological symptoms, evaluation by an experienced MS specialist or MS neurologist is recommended.
How Is MS Diagnosed?
There is no single test for multiple sclerosis. The MS diagnosis relies on a combination of clinical evaluation, imaging results, and diagnostic tests, which are interpreted over time by an experienced neurologist.
MS diagnosis under the 2024 McDonald criteria requires specific criteria to be met regarding lesions on MRI, biomarker assessment, and possibly spinal fluid analysis.
MIND’s Comprehensive Evaluations May Include:
- Neurological Examination
A detailed neurological exam evaluates strength, coordination, sensation, reflexes, and vision. - MRI Imaging
MRI scans of the brain and spinal cord help identify areas of demyelination (lesions) and assess disease activity over time. - Laboratory Testing
Blood tests may be used to rule out other conditions that can mimic MS.
Blood-based biomarker assessment that allows for more precise care. - Spinal Fluid Analysis
In certain cases, a lumbar puncture may be recommended to evaluate cerebrospinal fluid findings that may support the diagnosis.
Because MS can evolve, diagnosis may require careful observation and follow-up imaging.
Referring physicians may contact the MIND MS Center directly for coordinated evaluation, second opinions, or infusion therapy referrals.

Multiple Sclerosis Explained
![]()
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system — including the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord. MS disrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and the rest of the body. MS can affect different areas of the body. Symptoms depend on where inflammation and damage are occurring at any specific time. Nearly one million people in the U.S. are living with MS.

Because MS can affect different regions of the brain and spinal cord, symptoms vary depending on where inflammation or demyelination occurs. The central nervous system controls movement, sensation, vision, coordination, pain, and cognitive function — all of which may be affected.
Symptoms can develop suddenly or gradually. They may improve, remain stable, or evolve over time. In some cases, MRI imaging may reveal disease activity even when symptoms are mild — underscoring the importance of ongoing neurological monitoring.

MS does not follow a single pattern. Many individuals experience relapsing-remitting MS, characterized by episodes of new or worsening symptoms followed by periods of partial or complete recovery.
Other individuals may experience progressive forms of MS, in which neurological changes accumulate more gradually over time.
Modern MS treatment strategies focus on reducing relapses, limiting new MRI activity, and, when possible, slowing disease progression. Ongoing monitoring helps guide treatment adjustments as the disease evolves.

Questions Patients and Families Often Ask
What are the first signs of MS?
Can MS symptoms come and go?
Can MS affect bladder control?
How do doctors diagnose MS?
Is there a cure for MS?
What is infusion therapy for MS?
When should I see a neurologist for possible MS symptoms?
If you experience new or persistent neurological symptoms — such as vision changes, numbness or tingling, weakness, balance difficulties, or unexplained fatigue — a neurological evaluation may be appropriate. If you have sudden weakness, severe vision loss, or other urgent neurological symptoms, seek emergency care.
While many neurological symptoms can have causes other than multiple sclerosis, timely evaluation helps clarify diagnosis and determine whether additional testing, such as MRI imaging, is recommended.
If symptoms develop suddenly or significantly worsen, prompt medical attention is advised.
Does MIND participate in MS clinical research?
Yes. The MIND Multiple Sclerosis Center participates in ongoing MS clinical trials and research studies designed to advance understanding of MS and improve long-term treatment strategies.
Dr. Martin Belkin and Dr. Taylor Hess are actively involved as primary investigators in MS clinical research aimed at preventing any disease activity or, in some cases, attempting to repair prior damage to the brain or spinal cord.
Research participation is voluntary and may be discussed with patients when appropriate. Clinical research is carefully reviewed and conducted in accordance with established ethical and safety standards
What does a fellowship-trained MS neurologist mean?
A fellowship-trained MS neurologist is a physician who has completed additional specialized training in multiple sclerosis and related demyelinating disorders after finishing neurology residency. This advanced training focuses on MS diagnosis, disease-modifying therapies, relapse management, and long-term monitoring of disease progression, as well as studying the latest research. Fellowship training provides additional expertise beyond general neurology training.
What should I expect at my first MS center visit?
During your first visit to the MIND MS Center, a fellowship-trained MS neurologist will review your medical history, evaluate neurological function, and assess prior MRI findings. If additional testing is needed, recommendations may include updated MS MRI imaging or laboratory evaluation. Your physician will also discuss potential MS treatments or therapies and outline a monitoring plan based on your individual disease pattern.
