What to Expect

Your head will be measured and electrodes are placed on the scalp with a cream-like substance. You will then be asked to lie still, be relaxed and comfortable. During the test you may be asked to take repeated deep breathes (hyperventilation) or you may be shown a strobe light that flashes at different speeds (photic stimulation). Drowsiness and sleep are encouraged during the test.

Patient Preparation

Have clean hair without any hair styling products such as oil, gel or hairspray, please do not weave your hair. You will need to have less sleep the night before your test. Adults should not get more than 4-5 hours of sleep and children should not get more than 5 -7 hours of sleep. You will need to refrain from drinking caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea or pop on the day of the test. You will continue to take your prescribed medications unless otherwise indicated by your physician. A parent or guardian must accompany minors (under age 17). If you were prescribed a sedation for the test (for small children or patients that may not be cooperative), you will need to fill the prescription at your pharmacy and bring the medication with you to the appointment. The technician will let you know after arriving when to give the medication to the patient. The test will take approximately 60 minutes. Prolonged and sedated procedures will take approximately 1 ½ to 2 hours.

For patient’s ages 3 and under- bring a favorite video, toy, stuffed animal, bottle, pacifier and/or blanket to help calm the child. Be sure the child is sleep deprived and on the way to the EEG appointment, please keep the child awake and do not let the child nap.
